Adult Dog Training Classes

March 19 through April 9, 2013
Capital Humane Society (6-7 p.m.)

Building a solid foundation is to help the pet owner understand the importance of having a well trained dog, provide you with the knowledge necessary to build a solid training foundation to create a lasting bond between you and your dog. It will also help you understand canine behavior, learn to read your dogs body language, as well as how to motivate your dog with inductive techniques and the proper use of compulsive techniques. Without a solid foundation all future training will be hindered. With a solid foundation, the sky is the limit for all advanced training.

Session One will be comprised in large part by lecture, covering - focus, motivation, and use of appropriate corrections. The importance of consistency and timing will also be discussed. Also introduction to foundation exercises – sit with focus, and controlled walking with focus.

Session Two will consist of review, introduce formal heeling, sit – stay, come when called.

Session Three will include a review, Heeling with right turn, Sit-stay 60 seconds with trainer in motion and random recall.

Session Four will involve more review, Heeling figure eight and change of pace, Sit-stay with distractions 2 minutes plus, Come with front sit, Down and down stay, and problem solving.

Training Equipment: A tight-link chain training collar no more than 2 to 3 inches larger than the dog’s neck, a 4 to 6 foot leather or nylon training lead and some high value treats and/or a high value toy.

Please be on time. Our class time is limited and we need to use it efficiently.
During class, please keep your dogs separated and their attention on you. There will be time for socialization after class. Always get the owner’s permission before any interactions. Please clean up after your dog. Set a good example, thanks.
Family members are always welcome, please supervise small children.
